Because having at least one iconic film – not to mention a gore/boobs-stuffed TV series – made about your adventures might be enough for some people. But not Spartacus. Oh, no. The rebellious slave who led a revolt against the Romans is getting another crack at the big screen thanks to producer Graham King, who is developing a new version.

300 co-writer Michael B Gordon pitched GK Films a fresh take on the tale, one that will hew closer to the man’s historical background. But the basic plot will stay the same, with Spartacus leading an army of fellow slaves in a huge campaign against the mighty Roman war machine between 73 and 71 BC. Though he scored some huge victories, commander Marcus Licinius Crassus eventually defeated Spartacus’ forces.

Though there are plenty of adaptations of the story out there, King and co clearly think there’s scope for a reinvention. Though it’ll have to go some to step clear of the long shadow cast by the 1960 Stanley Kubrick version, which saw Kirk Douglas as the man himself. Anyone care to bet who the company might try to mold into a new Spartacus? And all those who raise their hands and say, “I’m Spartacus” to that can go to the back of the class for being smart arses.
