After five long years of planning, Kevin Spacey is to take the director's mantle as well as the lead role in a biopic of crooner Bobby Darin called Beyond the Sea. Long inked in to play the actor and composer most famous for penning easy listening favourite "Mack the Knife" and sugary ballad "Splish Splash", Spacey lamented even in 1998 that he was too old to portray Darin who tragically died at only 37. Now at the ripe old age of 43, Spacey merely laughed when asked by Variety whether his increasing wrinkles were even more of a hurdle now. "Bobby always looked a little older" he commented. "But if I waited any more I might be too old." Adding that the budget for his second outing as a director after 1996's Albino Alligator would be "considerable," Spacey revealed that the film covers the period from the 1940s to the '70s but is "not a linear story and not a docudrama." What is certain is that this is truly Spacey's favourite baby as he has been slipping in tributes to Darin in his films and public appearances for years. Not only did he sing Darin's "That Old Black Magic" on the Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil album but repeated the pitch perfect performance when he hosted US TV show "Saturday Night Live."
