Barack Obama still has 147 days left in the Oval Office, at time of writing, but Hollywood is already saying Yes We Can to Obama biopics. First out of the gates: Southside With You, which is being pitched as part political biopic, part romantic comedy. The first trailer has just arrived.

The film will not be a detailed examination of the 44th US President’s political legacy; instead, it focusses on a single afternoon in 1989, when young ‘Barry’ took his future wife Michelle Robinson on their first date around Chicago’s South Side.

Parker Sawyers plays the charming young law associate with a gift for oratory, while Tika Sumpter is his initially reluctant beau. The film, which debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival to a rapturous response, toes a fairly light romantic line, but also hints at the weightier political aspirations of the couple.

You won’t have to wait Four More Years for this Obamopic: Southside With You arrives on 26 August in the US, before a 30 September release here in the UK.
