Sony And Raimi Plan New Franchise

Mere moments after Spider-Man 3 had its world premiere in Tokyo, it's been announced that director Sam Raimi and studio Sony are to collaborate again, on an as-yet unnamed fantasy action-adventure. Clearly these guys just can't get enough of each other.

The film tells the story of a cynical guy from New York who has to travel to a land "untouched by modern civilisation" to save a princess and village full of people from fiendish fairy tale creatures. It's being described as an "all-ages fantasy movie with franchise potential", although the synopsis makes it sound a little like Terry Brooks' Magic Kingdom For Sale - Sold!, which was also picked up for development a couple of years back, though things have gone quiet on that front since.

There's no word yet on whether Raimi will direct, although the whole thing sounds rather up his street, but he will be producing through his Buckaroo Entertainment company, with Josh Donen. The script was written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, the guys behind Freddy Vs. Jason and a bunch of unproduced scripts including Spy Hunter and Power & Glory.
