Sony Checks In To Hotel Transylvania

A new CG monster 'toon

Sony is taking over the monster business from Universal. Well, almost.

With Hotel Transylvania, the company is planning a CGI cartoon featuring Frankenstein’s Monster, Dracula, the Mummy and the Werewolf – among others – hiding out in a hotel, worried that they’re being made redundant by modern technology. And, presumably, disgusted at the release of Van Helsing.

The studio is taking a hefty leap of faith – the first two films from the animation unit (hunting comedy Open Season and penguins hitting the waves in Surf’s Up) haven’t even opened yet.

"We were able to take some of the amazing talent from Open Season and shift them over," Sony exec Sandra Rabins told Variety. "It was perfect timing for them and really perfect for the tone of this new movie." Well, she would say that, wouldn’t she?
