Snakes Snacks On The US Box Office

...But it's hardly a high-flying start

Snakes Snacks On The US Box Office

Friday was All Snakes Day at the US box office as it was in the UK, but the final tally is a lot less hype-worthy. After months of buzz and chatter, the actual Stateside box office weekend for Snakes On A Plane was a little light.

Snakes managed to win the weekend, but only by a whisker, and mostly thanks to the late Thursday screenings. With $15.3 million, the Samuel L Jackson-starrer just edged out Talladega Nights. Will Ferrell’s comedy is holding strong, and screeched past the $100 million mark, with a current total of $114.6 million.

This week’s second new opening didn’t do half as well as Snakes, and likely saw some of its audience eaten up by the ravenous reptiles. Accepted, starring Dodgeball’s Justin Long, made just $10 million in its first weekend. But that’s still better than the third new arrival, Material Girls, a comedy with Hilary Duff and sister Haylie, which flopped on arrival with just $4.6 million. Still, it was probably cheap to make and they clearly didn’t spend much on marketing, since hardly anyone knew it was coming out….

So what of the rest of the charts? Pirates 2 just continued to suck in dosh like some sort of giant money tornado. It’s up past $400 million so far, in the US alone. The big news was the indie-that-could of the year, Little Miss Sunshine. The big seller at Sundance has been slowly growing, boosted by healthy word of mouth and glowing reviews. It made $5.6 million this week, and currently stands at $12.7 million.

Elsewhere, farm ‘toon Barnyard stayed strong in the middle of the charts, making $7.4 million, while horror Pulse faded quickly in its second week, taking in just $3.5 million. And World Trade Center grabbed $10 million for a currently total of $45 million.

It’s more than schadenfraude. It’s Chart-enfraude!
