Of all the movies released this summer, we’re fairly certain the one no one is expecting to generate a sequel is 20th Century Fox’s latest attempt to bring the Fantastic Four to screens. But writer/producer Simon Kinberg is keeping the idea of a new film alive.

“I’m really focused on the next one,” Kinberg tells MTV, while conceding that he wasn’t thrilled with the way the first one was received. “I was obviously disappointed. I was most disappointed that fans didn’t like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven’t done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don’t know.”

And, according to him, it wasn’t for want of trying. “Every time you make a movie, you want to make a great movie. It’s a ton of time and effort you put in. We made that movie in the sweltering heat of summer in Baton Rouge and I was there every day of photography. It was an opportunity to do that. I do believe there is a great Fantastic Four movie to be made with that cast. So I’m gonna figure out what that is. I'd like that to happen."

The movie’s box office performance ($160.7 million worldwide and counting) wouldn’t seem to lend itself to the studio leaping on board another, but Kinberg has a lot of influence thanks to his work on the X-Men movies and, though at Disney, the** Star Wars** franchise. He’s hopeful the cast would return if they can get the script together and, presumably a different director (given the reports of trouble between Josh Trank and the executives), but right now it might be more wishful thinking on his part than anything else.
