Thanks to a successful, expectation-exceeding launch at the box office this weekend, Shazam! is enjoying its turn in the spotlight, with The Rock taking to Instagram to celebrate the film he co-produced and tease his Black Adam film tied to the movie's mythology. But what of the superhero film itself? According to The Wrap, plans are quietly under way for a sequel to the action-comedy romp, with screenwriter Henry Gayden hired for the follow-up.

Gayden was the credited writer on the finished film, having taking over scripting chores from Darren Lemke, who had been trying to find a way to squeeze both Shazam and Black Adam's origin stories into the movie. A split was needed to properly make it work, and the result speaks for itself. Gayden, a man in demand with scripts ongoing for Phil Lord and Chris Miller and Andy Muschietti, is making a deal to tell the further adventures of Shazam.

The Wrap's report also mentions that director David F. Sandberg and producer Peter Safran are expected to return, but nothing has been officially announced yet and we don't know when this one might shoot.
