December 12 may be the day that the earth stands still to welcome the arrival of Scott Derrickson’s remake of The Day The Earth Stood Still, but September 17 is The Day The Earth Sits Still In Its Seat while watching seven minutes from the sci-fi blockbuster.

Oh, ok, you can fidget around a bit. But no scratching. Especially not down there.

Ropeofsilicon.com has a clip from the movie that actually debuted on Fox TV in the States on Sunday night, following a repeat of JJ Abrams’ latest TV show, Fringe. But we’re guessing that most of you didn’t see that, readers, so here’s your chance to get acquainted.

The story so far: a remake of Robert Wise’s all-time great sci-fi, The Day The Earth Stood Still stars Keanu Reeves as Klaatu, an alien from another planet who arrives on Earth with a dire warning: quit screwing with the planet or everyone dies. Got that, oil companies?

Jennifer Connelly stars as a scientist who may hold the key to the whole kit and kaboodle, and Jon Hamm also shows up as a government type, which is hugely exciting for Mad Men fans, who talk about this guy in hushed tones normally reserved for deities or Steven Gerrard’s goal in tonight’s Marseilles-Liverpool game.

The footage itself is essentially an extended trailer, combining new looks at the spaceships in which Klaatu and his race come to Earth with footage that screened at Movie-Con (Keanu’s arrival on Earth) and Comic-Con (his interrogation, and subsequent nifty role reversal). And we’re pretty impressed – the tone appears to be more sombre than most movies of its type, while Derrickson appears to be handling the visuals pretty well. Of course, much remains to be seen, but we’re quietly encouraged.
