Acclaimed novelist James Ellory acting as a writer for hire? It’s true – New Line has just signed him up to adapt a novel.

Nicci French’s Land Of The Living, to be exact. The book follows a promiscuous woman captured and tortured by a serial killer. But when she’s released, she has to convince the authorities and even her friends that the event actually happened… because they all think she’s lying.

It’s not the first time Ellroy has adapted a book for the screen, but before they've always been his own: he’s just completed work on The Nightwatchman for Paramount. And those craving more Ellroy action can look forward to Brian DePalma’s adaptation of The Black Dahlia, starring Josh Hartnett and Scarlett Johansson, which will hit cinemas this year.
