Looks like Kevin Smith's hockey comedy Hit Somebody is in for some friendly competition. Michael Dowse's Goon is hitting the ice first, with Seann William Scott{ =nofollow}, Jay Baruchel, Alison Pill and Marc-Andre Grondin all already signed on.

Goon (not to be confused with** The Goon**, which is rather different, nor the Diana Wynne Jones book Archer's Goon) is based on the book by Doug Smith and Adam Frattasio, Goon: The True Story of an Unlikely Journey into Minor League Hockey. It focuses on Doug Glatt, a bouncer who discovers a talent for ice-skating and hitting people, making him the ideal new secret weapon for a down-on-their-luck local hockey team.

Scott is set to play Glatt, with Baruchel as his best friend. Pill (Scott Pilgrim's awesome sourpuss drummer Kim) is the female lead, and Grondin (Che) is a French-Canadian star player.

Hit Somebody is still definitely going ahead: last we heard it was shooting "ass to ass" with Red State, and Kevin Smith recently confirmed a role in it for John Goodman. Thing is, Scott was originally intended as the centre, and seemed keen to lace up his skates for Smith. Is he aiming to become to the ice hockey movie what Kevin Costner is to baseball? Or does the timing rule that out? Has he changed his hockey allegiance? And did he choose the right side?

Shooting on Goon starts in Winnipeg in a couple of weeks. Hit Somebody, if the plan remains as it was, should get going shortly after Red State wraps.
