Thus far with the new, fifth Scream film, the major cast announcements have been for legacy actors returning to their classic roles, such as Courteney Cox and David Arquette. But, according to Deadline Vida actress Melissa Barrera will play a key role in the film.

That role is being kept a mystery for now, but she'll join Cox's Gale Weathers and Arquette's Dewey Riley (plus, assuming the deal is sealed, Neve Campbell and central figure Sidney Prescott) in the film, which will continue the story while re-inventing it for a new audience.

Ready Or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are sharing the director's chair, working from a script by James Vanderbilt and their Ready collaborator Guy Busick.

Barrera is currently best known for Vida, but she'll be seen next year in the movie version of Lin-Manuel Miranda's stage musical In The Heights. The new Scream, meanwhile, is scheduled to kick off shooting at the end of the year in North Carolina.
