Ronan plays Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson, who fights against – but is exactly like – her wildly loving, deeply opinionated and strong-willed mother Marion (Laurie Metcalf), a nurse working tirelessly to keep her family afloat after Lady Bird's father Larry (Tracy Letts) loses his job. Set in Sacramento, California in 2002, the story sees Lady Bird forced to confront a new dynamic even as she struggles to find her own identity.
The new film definitely feels of a piece with some of the work that Gerwig herself has appeared in – a dash of quirk, some family strife and a striking lead performance from a talented actress.
Lady Bird will be out in the UK in February.
