Sam Raimi

There was some excitement earlier this month at news that Sam Raimi was diving back into the world of horror, agreeing to direct and produce an entry of horror anthology series 50 States Of Fright for the short-form Quibi app service coming to phones next year. If that made you think, 'okay, but I wish he was making a new movie', we've good news: Raimi is also doing that.

Sony's Columbia arm has him ready to direct an untitled horror movie written by Friday The 13th 2009 reboot duo Mark Swift and Damian Shannon. The details are largely being kept hidden away for now, with The Hollywood Reporter only able to dig up a description that reads as "Misery meets Cast Away". So... An author meets a crazed fan on a desert island after a plane crash? Probably not, but perhaps it follows someone trying to survive not just their environment, but someone – or something – on it. The concept was going to be taken out to studios this week, but Columbia heard about it and leapt in with an early offer. Raimi has worked with the writers before, on a film about the Bermuda Triangle which, ironically, appears lost in limbo.

It's good to see Raimi – who has kept his hand in horror as a producer, at least – getting back behind the camera to scare us on the big screen.
