Sam Raimi might be one of the key producers behind the Grudge films (the latest of which landed with a quiet splat at the American box office this weekend), but whenever he's out promoting something, there's one project that he'll always be asked about: The Evil Dead. And according to Raimi himself during a Reddit AMA (spotted by the Collider team), he's developing another new entry.

"Bruce, Rob and I are working with a young filmmaker who is writing a new Evil Dead story that he will direct," Raimi said in answer to a query about the future of the Dead films, which helped kick off his, star Bruce Campbell and producer Robert Tapert's careers. The most recent unearthing of this particular franchise was the 2013 effort directed by Fede Alvarez and starring Jane Levy, which rebooted the original movie.

Quite what the new film has in store (a sequel to the 2013 one? A totally new story?) remains a mystery for now as Raimi didn't say more about it. He did, however pour, if not cold, then lukewarm water on the idea of his returning to make one of the movies himself. "As for me... I would love to direct a new Evil Dead movie... but I'd really like to do it with Bruce. And he says he's retired the character. I hope not."

The new outing for The Grudge arrives in UK cinemas on 24 January.
