Whiplash’s Damien Chazelle is back with another jazz-fuelled tale, this time a musical one. La La Land stars the hotter-than-molten-magma-on-a-particularly-warm-day-on-the-sun duo of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, and it has a new, throwback-sounding trailer to share below.

La La Land, as the title suggests is set in Los Angeles, a place known as the fame flame to which aspiring young moths are drawn. Just two are Sebastian (Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, and Mia (Stone), an aspiring actress who are struggling to make ends meet as they pursue their dreams. Can their love survive the pressures and strains of life in this creative boiler room?

“I’d been working on La La Land since 2010,” explains Chazelle of its origins in the new issue of Empire. “I was toying with the script while my friend (Whiplash composer) Justin Hurwitz came up with musical ideas. It was hard to get off the ground, but Whiplash allowed it to happen – much to the horror of some of the executives we brought it to. It was a tough sell, but they took the gamble."

With John Legend, Rosemarie DeWitt, Finn Wittrock and Callie Hernandez also in the cast, La La Land will be out in the US this coming December and lands on UK screens on 13 January next year.
