Moonfall

If you're craving the sort of giant disaster film that also looks like it could be utterly absurd (think perennial Empire team obsession Geostorm), then Roland Emmerich is here to fill that void. With the moon. The first teaser for his new disasterama Moonfall is online.

The plot is pure Emmerich setup: a mysterious force knocks the moon from its orbit and sends it hurtling towards the Earth, promising to end life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former space jockey Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) is convinced she has to key to save us – but only from astronaut from her past (Patrick Wilson's Brian Harper) and conspiracy theorist KC Houseman (John Bradley) believe her. Cue a mission into space, one that leads to a surprising revelation about the moon itself...

Emmerich wrote this one alongside regular collaborators Spenser Cohen and Harald Kloser (though we really picture them smashing space shuttles together and scribbling down the noises they make) and we do wonder what draws the likes of Berry, Wilson and Michael Peña to a movie like this (our guess is this). But Moonfall could either be ridiculously awful or ridiculous amounts of fun and we are ready to watch when it arrives.

Moonfall touches down in cinemas in both the UK and US on 4 February next year.
