While this year's New Year Honours are deservedly more focused on the public sector workers who have done so much in 2020, there were some names in entertainment who made the list, with Roger Deakins, Sheila Hancock, Toby Jones and Lesley Manville among them.

Deakins, who won his second Oscar this year for 1917, will be knighted, which seems only fair given his sterling work in cinematography through the decades. Likewise Hancock, who becomes a Dame after years of work on stage and screen. "I've never felt myself this sort of person," she said of the honour. "It just doesn't happen to people like me. I feel I may be lowering the tone. I feel slightly miscast, let's put it that way."

Manville becomes a CBE for services to drama and charity, though you do have to wonder that whichever royal family bestows the honour will want to ask her about her plans to play Princess Margaret in series 5 and 6 of The Crown. Jones, meanwhile, is becoming an OBE.

Among the other awards? actor Nina Wadia, and singer Craig David.
