No, he hasn’t fallen afoul of the world’s most depressed Twihard who just learned that Breaking Dawn: Part 2 is the last she’ll see of Edward on screen for the moment. Robert Pattinson has, instead, fallen afoul of a very angry seeming Guy Pearce who just learned that Breaking Dawn is a dark, dangerous, murderous sort in David Michôd’s The Rover.
The Animal Kingdom director’s new film is set in the near future, at a time when a huge financial collapse has seen many running to the Australian Outback, hoping to tap what remains of the place’s mines.
“It’s like a new gold rush,” Michôd, who co-wrote the story with Joel Edgerton, tells Entertainment Weekly. “Where people from all corners of the world have come out to the desert to scrape out an existence. Petty criminals and miscreants and hustlers.”
Naturally, setting the film in the Australian desert and the future means inevitable comparisons to George Miller’s iconic franchise. “You put cars in the desert in Australia and people are going to think of Mad Max,” says Michôd. “And with all due respect to that film –and I stress that – I think **The Rover **is going to be way more chillingly authentic and menacing.” We believe him on both counts.
