The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings was the clear winner today with a total of 13 mentions in this year's Oscar nominations. The nominations, which were announced in LA today by Marcia Gay Harden and Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Frank Pierson, mark the end of months of frenzied speculation. Unlike recent years, where one film has led from the beginning, this year's awards were an open race until the very last minute, with studios spending unprecedented amounts on marketing in the final few weeks. The Brits, in particular, did well in the main categories. Helen Mirren, Kate Winslet and Maggie Smith all picked up nominations for Best Supporting Actress. Ben Kingsley, Jim Broadbent and Ian McKellen all received a nod for Best Supporting Actor while Dame Judi Dench received her fourth Oscar nomination in five years - this time for her role in Iris. As predicted, Tom Wilkinson also made it to the final five for Best Actor for his part in In The Bedroom. The British also did well in other categories - Ridley Scott was picked in the Best Director field, while Julian Fellowes was named for Best Original Screenplay. Surprises included Renee Zellweger featuring in the Best Actress category and Ethan Hawke making the grade for Best Supporting Actor. For black actors, the 2002 Academy Awards mark the first time in thirty years that three black actors have been nominated for acting awards - Denzel Washington, Will Smith and Halle Berry. The five movies chosen for Best Film were Moulin Rouge, The Lord of the Rings, A Beautiful Mind, Gosford Park and In the Bedroom. Best Actors were Russell Crowe, Sean Penn, Will Smith, Denzel Washington and Tom Wilkinson. Best Actresses were Renee Zellweger, Sissy Spacek, Judi Dench, Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman. The most-nominated films were The Lord of the Rings with 13 nominations, A Beautiful Mind and Moulin Rouge with 8, Gosford Park with 7 and then both Amelie and In The Bedroom with 5 a piece. "I am honored to receive these nominations,' said Altman today. 'Working on Gosford Park was a joy and a delight thanks to the glorious cast. To be recognized by the Academy makes it all the sweeter.'
