Ridley Scott has the Biblical bug. With Exodus: Gods And Kings marching its way towards our cinemas (and putting out a first trailer), the director is already looking at another potential Old Testament character: David.

According to Variety, 20th Century Fox has hired Jonathan Stokes to start work on a script that would take the story of David and Goliath – normal man takes on giant warrior and (spoiler alert!) fells him with a slingshot – as its inspiration for a script that will likely follow David’s reign as a king after his epic victory.

So far, all we really know is that the film bears the working title of David and that Scott is aboard to develop the idea alongside Exodus partner company Chernin Entertainment. And he may not end up actually calling the shots: while he’s definitely producing, he could well hand it off to someone else, even as Fox would likely be willing to wait until he’s available given that it’s another epic story in the making.

All of that, of course, is in the future and first the script must be cracked. Scott, meanwhile, will be out stumping for Exodus (due December 26) and plans to shoot Matt Damon astronaut thriller** The Martian** next, along with the developing Prometheus sequel.
