The cast of James Cameron's Avatar seems to be growing by the day, with the news emerging that professional weirdo (onscreen; we're sure he's lovely in real life) Giovanni Ribisi is joining the sci-fi epic.

He'll be playing a "passive-agressive character" called Selfridge in the story, which sees a band of humans pitted against a distant world's native inhabitants - except that it's all a bit more complicated than that.

Production is already underway in LA and due to move to Weta Digital in New Zealand next month - the film's going to be a blend of live-action and the specially-developed virtual photorealistic techniques. There are even going to be six "synthespians" in the cast, computer generated actors who will soon end our reliance on Rob Schneider forever.

Avatar is due on May 22, 2009.
