When the first trailer for Red Sparrow arrived, Marvel fans cried out that it looked like a long wished-for Black Widow movie: Russian spies, violent confrontations, and splashes of ballet. But Jennifer Lawrence’s latest film is a different beast — an uncompromising, grown-up thriller that’s likely to shock audiences.
Lawrence plays Dominika, a Russian dancer who’s forced into a vicious spy boot camp and dispatched on a mission of slow-burning tension and character-driven twists. Take a look at an exclusive image of Dominika in a tense interrogation scene, as seen in the new issue of Empire.
Red Sparrow re-teams Jennifer Lawrence with director Francis Lawrence (no relation), who helmed the final three Hunger Games films — an existing relationship which the director says helped in some of Red Sparrow’s more intense moments. “We like working with one another, and she trusts me,” he told Empire. “She knew that I would not force her into any situation in which she was uncomfortable.”
