While 1994’s Reality Bites could accurately be described as a cult success rather than a big hit at the box office, it nevertheless struck a chord and encapsulated the Generation X zeitgeist. So now, nearly 20 years later, it’s getting the chance to explore the era in more depth, as director Ben Stiller and writer Helen Childress team up to develop TV version for NBC.

The film version starred Winona Ryder as Lelaina Pierce, freshly graduated from college and negotiating the minefields of love, life and career in the mid-1990s with help (or hindrance) from the likes of Ethan Hawke, Janeane Garofalo, Steve Zahn and Stiller himself.

As for the planned show, it’ll follow Lelaina as she continues to chronicle her life in the same time period, albeit in a single-camera comedy format. There’s no word on casting yet, but Stiller and Childress will produce the show along with Michael Shamberg and Stacey Sher, who were also involved with the movie.
