Back in 2014, Quentin Tarantino began work on a comicbook sequel to 2012's Django Unchained. He came up with the concept, while Matt Wagner wrote the books and Esteve Polls took the lead on the artwork. Now, according to Collider, Tarantino has The Carmichael Show's Jerrod Carmichael on to write a movie based on the series.

The story takes place several years after the events of the film. Django is still a bounty hunter, and since there’s a warrant on his head back east, he has mainly been plying his trade in the western states. After safely settling his wife, Broomhilda, near Chicago, he takes to the road once again, sending her funds whenever he completes a job. It’s by sheer chance that he encounters the aged and sophisticated Diego de la Vega – the famed Zorro – and soon finds himself fascinated by this unusual character, who can also hold his own in a fight. It’s not long before Django becomes Diego’s 'bodyguard' and joins him on a mission to free the local indigenous people from slavery.

While the director has reportedly been looking to turn this one into a film for a while, he's been busy on other projects, including this year's Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood. Now, though, he's reportedly developing the film. It's doubtful he'd direct as he tends to favour his own scripts, and while he's famously said he wants to retire after making 10 films, a Django/Zorro crossover seems an unlikely way to bow out. Still, he'll be spearheading finding someone to make the movie a reality assuming it goes ahead.

Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood will be out on 14 August.
