Hundreds of protesters are planning a candlelit protest outside the premiere of new movie Angela's Ashes in Limerick on Thursday (January 13). Locals are enraged over the way their city has been portrayed in the new Alan Parker film, based on **Frank McCourt's **Pulitzer prize-winning memoir. The protest will be led by local broadcaster Gerry Hannan, who has branded Limerick-raised McCourt a liar on national television. Hannan says, "McCourt has never sued me because he knows I am right. The ordinary people of Limerick feel the same way I do. They are angry that he has created this illusion which made him famous." As well as planning the protest, Hannan has also been lampooning the next instalment in McCourt's story, 'Tis. The DJ has dubbed his version 'Tis in My Ass. The film's main premiere is being held in Dublin that same night, while the Limerick protest will take place outside the local multiplex. Hannan adds, "They moved the premiere from Limerick because they knew they would get a lot of flak. The ordinary people of the city feel that what he has done is unforgivable. He has tarnished Limerick" However, Readers might be interested to note that a common nickname for Limerick in the nineteen seventies and eighties was 'Stab City', a reference to the town's notorious levels of violence.
