Prinze Jr In A New York City Serenade

A tale of friendship turned sour

The film’s called New York City Serenade, but it looks like there’s no singing involved for stars Chris Klein and Freddie Prinze Jr. Which is probably very good thing for audience ears.

No, this is actually a tale loosely inspired by a difficult period in the life of writer/director Frank Whaley. Set in the mid-1990s, the film will follow two friends. Owen (Prinze) is an aspiring filmmaker with a crap job and a beautiful fiancée (The Sopranos' Jamie-Lynn Sigler). His best mate Ray (Klein), is a deadbeat dad who plays drums in a band and regularly gets involved in fights.

But their relationship faces a test when Owen scores some good luck, winning acceptance into a film festival. There’s more luck on the way when they meet Wallace Shawn – who will play himself – at the airport. He invites them to stay at the Four Seasons Hotel, but things turn sour when Owen finds out Ray has been posing as Shawn’s son. The pair have a bitter fight and go their separate ways never intending to meet again. But that’s not the end of the story...

Whaley will kick off shooting in New York shortly.
