Bruce Almighty smites The Matrix

It exploded onto our screens, set new world records as it passed the $150 million mark and looked to become a box office phenomenon. But, just as The Matrix Reloaded's momentum looked all but unstoppable, along came Jim Carrey and stopped it in its tracks. For a film that features Carrey as deity for a day Bruce Almighty certainly worked a miracle, squeezing $86.4 million into its wallet over the three-day weekend - almost doubling The Matrix's $45.6 million. Seeing Carrey 'cursed' with divine powers after accusing God of being slack in dealing with His people, the film sees him set out to show exactly how an omnipotent being should govern the universe. Though the idea of endowing the rubber-faced actor with godlike abilities is, quite clearly, too horrible to contemplate, Bruce Almighty has certainly struck a chord with the non-Matrix crowd and if you've seen the alarmingly funny trailer then you'll understand why. But despite being beaten bloody over the weekend Reloaded has taken more than $210 million to date so we don't imagine too many tears being shed over at Warners.
