Speculation about who will be helming the first Harry Potter adaptation has been running rife since Spielberg confirmed he was out of the running. Names bandied about have included American Beauty's Sam Mendes - currently box-office gold - actor/director Tim Robbins and Forest Gump helmer Robert Zemeckis.

Now Variety reports that the movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (to give it its full Americanised title), will de directed by one of the following - Alan 'Angela's Ashes' Parker, Brad 'City of Angels' Siberling, Chris 'Home Alone' Columbus or Terry 'Twelve Monkeys' Gilliam. And the next crucial step, finding the right boy to play the heroic wizard-in-training, will have to wait until the powers that be finally settle for their man.
