Butterflies, eh? What could possibly be so horrific about cute, flappy, soft butterflies that they’d be chosen to grace the poster for scare story The Possession? HOW ABOUT IF THEY ROAR FROM YOUR GOB AS YOU SCREAM IN A BUTTERFLY-SPOUTING RICTUS? HOW ABOUT THEN? Apparently, that works, as you can see below in the new image that arrives via MTV.

Produced by Sam Raimi and, according to the top of the poster, based on a true story, The Possession tells of divorced parents Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Kyra Sedgwick, who are trying to make their upheaval as easy as possible on their two daughters.

But then one of the girls, Em (Natasha Callis) finds an intriguing old box at a garage sale and takes it home. At first it’s just a minor mystery, but things spiral into horror as an ancient spirit lurking within takes over Em’s mind and body and terrible things start to happen. Can mum and dad help her before it’s too late?

With Deliver Us From Evil director Ole Bornedal in charge of the megaphone, the film will be out on August 31. The trailer is already online and can be watched via this handy link.
