Reese Witherspoon managed to catch America off guard this weekend, storming to victory with rom-com hit, Sweet Home Alabama. Leaving Jackie Chan's The Tuxedo in her wake, Witherspoon managed to lead the biggest September debut in history with a $37.5 million opening weekend. The Legally Blonde star plays a trailer trash housewife from Alabama who ups and leaves her husband, moves to New York and passes herself off as a big city socialite. Garnering some iffy reviews from US critics, Sweet Home Alabama nevertheless proved a hit with the American public and is sure to guarantee the film's cherubic star an even bigger sack of cash for her next fluffy endeavour.
