Yo ho ho and a bottle of bubbly again this week for the cast and crew of Pirates 2. Yes, Jack Sparrow and his crew continue to sail the high seas at the top of the charts. Which left a second place berth wide open for one of two new contenders: Owen Wilson’s new comedy You, Me And Dupree and the latest offering from the Wayans brothers, Little Man.
The final result was closer than a photo finish at Ascot, and with the box office figures still at studio estimate stage, don’t take these positions as set in stone. But as of Sunday evening in the US, the numbers had Little Man just ahead with $21.7 million, while Dupree managed $21.3 million. Looks like the Wayans continue their winning ways, managing to convince lots of people that Marlon’s head placed on a child actor’s body via CG trickery is hilarious. Next up: Keenan Ivory Wayans cures world hunger.
The rest of the charts show business as usual, which just about every film taking one step down. Cars continues to show impressive staying power and is now the third-highest grossing film of the year, behind X3 and Pirates 2. Superman still isn’t quite living up to his name and the only other new entry was A Scanner Darkly, which is still in limited release, but managed to grab $1.2 million this weekend.
Next week? Lady In The Water, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Clerks II compete to see if they can knock Jack Sparrow’s hat off. Well, maybe not Clerks II. But from the sound of it, it’ll be the bomb. Like Affleck in Phantoms.
There’s no justice. There’s just… The charts!
