Hands up anyone who thought Disney might actually make Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in 2D. Crazy fools! With Alice In Wonderland’s 3D-boosted box office success, it was pretty much a foregone conclusion that the studio would want to get the latest voyage of their action adventure mega franchise released in what they like to call Disney Digital 3D.

At least the decision has been made before the film actually starts filming: it means that director Rob Marshall and his crew can incorporate the technology into their shots and not end up faced with a last-minute conversion job like Clash Of The Titans.

On Stranger Tides will see Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow questing for the legendary Fountain of Youth. He’ll encounter trouble with Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and may find some romance with the villain’s daughter (Penelope Cruz).

And despite the seemingly late announcement of a 3D shoot, the movie’s apparently still on course to dock in cinemas May 20, 2011.
