The 20th Century Fox portion of the Marvel universe is expanding as the studio takes advantage of its blend of mutants and mercenaries. Bryan Singer is following up X-Men: Days Of Future Past with X-Men: Apocalypse, which focuses more on the younger, First Class versions of the characters. But according to franchise veteran Patrick Stewart, his older take on Professor Charles Xavier could return for a new Wolverine film, while Ian McKellen appears destined to at least cameo in **Apocalypse.

Appearing to contradict earlier statements that Stewart and McKellen would not be appearing in Apocalypse, the actor confirms that he at least won’t be reporting for duty in Montreal when the film starts shooting soon, but that “Magneto, Ian McKellen, is certainly going to be in it.”

As for the Prof? “What I'm very excited about is that we have been talking about a Wolverine movie, which would team Hugh Jackman and myself together,” he tells The Oregonian during an interview about one of his latest films, Match. “Wolverine and Professor Xavier. That would be a very different sort of X-Men from the four movies that I've already done.”

Though they come from Stewart himself, the comments still have to be categorised as rumour for now as he’s not the final arbiter of what actually makes it to the screen. Still, it could be a lot of fun to see Stewart and Jackman play off their personalities on screen together properly, assuming it’s not just a cinematic version of this{ =nofollow}.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to arrive here on May 19 next year, featuring the likes of James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, Michael Fassbender, Tye Sheridan, Sophie Turner, Alexandra Shipp and Rose Byrne facing off against Oscar Isaac’s supremely powerful mutant. Singer is busy scouting the film, and posted a hint about things to come on Instagram.
