While its action-heavy giant robots-battle-massive-monsters scale might have seemed perfect for 3D (despite the drawbacks of the format), Guillermo del Toro has been on record as preferring not to give Pacific Rim the stereographic treatment. Well, it would appear that Warners has other ideas and is already post-converting the movie.

The film was shot in 2D and will have to go through the usual process, which, with del Toro overseeing things, should hopefully not end up in a Clash Of The Titans murk-fest situation. The release date is currently still set for next July, so that should leave enough time to do a proper job.

Pacific Rim finds Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day as the humans engaged in a battle against invading alien beasties. They’re called upon to pilot a huge human defence ‘bot – a Jaeger- to stop the marauding nasties from wiping us all out.

Del Toro showed a small fragment of the movie off to impressive effect at this year’s Comic-Con, but we’ll have to wait a little while to see the first trailer. While you test your patience, why not check out our feature on monster movies to catch up on before you see the Rim?
