Well, you could knock us over with a feather. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix has broken box-office records on its opening day in US. It took $44.2 million on its Wednesday opening, a Wednesday record and the fifth-largest single day opening ever.

That puts it just ahead of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End earlier this year (although behind Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest), which opened on nearly 100 more screens, and suggests that Potter fever is still running high in the run-up to the release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in a couple of weeks. In terms of Wednesdays, it beat both the previous holder, Spider-Man 2, and The Return of the King, which by our calculations means that it will make £1.8billion worldwide. Well, maybe not quite that much.

Still, it's all good news for the release of the last book and for director David Yates, who's already signed on for film number six. We'll bring you the full lowdown on Harry's performance here next week.
