Now we get what’s happening with Ted Melfi’s new comedy drama, St Vincent De Van Nuys… It’s actually a stealthy remake of Bridesmaids with Bill Murray in the Kristen Wiig role. OK, perhaps not. But it does already boast Melissa McCarthy opposite Murray, and Melfi is now in talks with Chris O’Dowd to co-star.
St. Vincent De Van Nuys sees McCarthy in what should be a very different role for her, that of a struggling single mother who somehow decides that the best person around to care for her 12-year-son is their neighbour (Murray), a cranky older gentleman with bad habits and even worse attitudes who nevertheless seems harmless.
Despite the potential for it all to end up in a child endangerment report, it turns out that Murray and the child are actually a great partnership and learn from each other. O’Dowd, assuming he actually locks in a deal, would be a sympathetic Catholic priest who is shocked at how positive an influence the kid has on Murray.
Melfi is currently gathering the rest of the cast and plans to kick off filming in July. O’Dowd will next appear alongside Nick Frost in Cuban Fury, John Michael McDonagh’s Calvary and briefly in Thor: The Dark World.But before all of that, he’s on the small screen in Christopher Guest’s Family Tree.
