Norrington Directs Clash of the Titans

He's been a long time in the wilderness, but Stephen Norrington has finally come back to Tinseltown, with the news that the director of Blade and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (his last film, four years ago) has signed on to remake Clash of the Titans.

The original, from 1981, is a classic most associated with stop-motion genius Ray Harryhausen (although it was directed by Desmond Davis). It tells the story of Perseus (Harry Hamlin in the original) who must befriend Pegasus, fight the Kraken and kill Medusa in order to save his true love, Andromeda. Given that, in recent years, we've had huge fantasy hits and quite a few sword-and-sandal epics, this could be just the crossover we're looking for.

The script for this effort was written by Travis Beacham, but was then rewritten by Lawrence Kasdan. The last film he rewrote was The Empire Strikes Back, so we'd say that bodes rather well. Norrington, who came to directing through special effects, seems like a good fit for the material, and it's nice to see that some of the cast and crew of LXG have recovered from that experience and rejoined us.
