The critics might not have given it a passing grade, but new comedy Night School appears to have found some support among audiences. It made $28 million at the US box office this weekend, arriving in the top spot.

Following on behind was animated yeti comedy Smallfoot, which launched in second place with $23 million. The two new arrivals pushed last week's champ, The House With A Clock In Its Walls down to third, with the family-friendly horror adventure scoring $12.5 million.

In fourth, we find A Simple Favour, which took in $6.6 million, while The Nun rounded out the top five with $5.4 million.

In sixth was fellow horror pic Hell Fest, kicking off its box office run with a less-than-satisfying $5 million. Crazy Rich Asians slipped to seventh on the back of $4.1 million, while The Predator fell a few places and landed eighth on $3.7 million.

In ninth, true-life tale White Boy Rick continued to underperform, making $2.3 million, while action thriller Peppermint fell to 10th, earning $1.7 million.
