He almost played Superman. He went all hot-headed as Ghost Rider. He channeled a violent Adam West-era Batman in Kick-Ass. And now he’s going to be Spider-Man. Sort of. Nicolas Cage is said to be a part of Sony’s upcoming animation Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which looks to be colliding multiple universes into one ambitious adventure.

As the trailer already teased, Spider-Verse will bring us multiple Spider-Men — from protagonist Miles Morales, to an older Peter Parker, and fan-favourite Spider-Gwen. According to Collider, Cage will be playing Spider-Man Noir — a 1933 depression-era, pistol-toting version of the character. The Noir design in Spider-Verse hasn’t been revealed yet, but in the comics it’s less superhero, more retro vigilante with a long flowing trenchcoat and goggles — throw in Cage’s voice, and this sounds bonkers and brilliant.

Elsewhere, the film has Hailee Steinfeld playing Gwen Stacy, Lily Tomlin as Aunt May, and Liev Schreiber voicing the Kingpin. With Phil Lord and Chris Miller producing and the trailers showing off a unique and vibrant animation style, this is one non-MCU superhero film to keep an eye on.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swings into UK cinemas on 14 December.
