Given the results of this weekend’s box office haul, it sounds like the corridors and lobbies of America’s cinemas were largely filled with silence, as none of the new arrivals made much of an impact. Still, with $13.7 million, New Year’s Eve scraped out a win despite poisonous reviews. That was enough to ensure that The Sitter had to make do with second place and a disappointing $10 million.

In third, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1 managed to cling on ahead of The Muppets, with Bella, Edward and co nabbing $7.9 million and Kermit and friends making $7 million.

Arthur Christmas was down one to fifth, earning $6.6 million, while Hugo slipped to sixth and $6.1 million. **The Descendants **stayed in place at seventh, taking $4.8 million.

Happy Feet Two slumped down to eighth place with $3.75 million, Jack And Jill was ninth with $3.2 million and Immortals rounded out the top 10, earning $2.4 million this weekend.
