We’ve had our goose cooked by the idea of 'inception', we’re about to be brain-twizzled by 'the zero theorem', and next our frontal lobes will sizzle like crispy bacon at the concept of 'singularity' in Transcendence. The “science” part of “science-fiction” is well served on the big screen at the moment and Wally Pfister’s new sci-fi is not messing about it. Just look how ginormous the computer chips are in these new stills. Singularity, for non-boffins out there, is the point in human existence when the machines become cleverer than us. Not all bad, you’d think. Especially if you can persuade your Xbox to go work for you.

It’s not all good, either – at least not for tech whizz Johnny Depp’s character, Dr. Will Caster. He’s a computer scientist deep into researching the singularity and intent on creating a machine that can channel real human emotions. Brought fame and fortune by his work, Caster’s Icarus moment comes when a group of anti-technology extremists accidentally merge his consciousness with that of the machine. That happened to us once on Hotmail, and it's no fun at all. {New Transcendence Poster} These pictures showcase some of the other characters, including Rebecca Hall as Will’s wife Evelyn, and best friend Max Waters (Paul Bettany). They play fellow research wonks who surely must bellow “Fuck you science!” at some point in proceedings.

Pfister’s cinematography has been a big feature of Christopher Nolan’s blockbusters and we can’t wait to see what he can do with an expanded brief and some big ideas of his own to throw about. He achieves **Transcendence **on April 25 in the UK. Check out the trailer here.
