Marvel's The Defenders – the Avengers-esque superhero teaming of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and The Other One – debuted on Netflix this weekend, and for those who diligently binged all eight episodes, there was a treat at the end: a brand new trailer for The Punisher, the next standalone series to come to Netflix. That trailer has now emerged online – watch it below.

Having made an extremely well-received appearance in Daredevil Season 2, Jon Bernthal returns to play Frank Castle, the ex-soldier turned vengeful vigilante who dishes out bloody justice on the streets of New York.

Various attempts to bring the character to the big-screen have faltered over the years, with Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane and Ray Stevenson all slipping on the black-and-white skull costume to varying degrees of success. But Bernthal's scene-stealing turn in Daredevil gives us reason to hope.

First debuting in the Amazing Spider-Man run of Marvel comics in 1974, The Punisher makes his solo small-screen debut on Netflix at some point this year – tantalisingly, that trailer only offered a year, not a month or day. Watch this space.
