What We Do In The Shadows, a vampire mockumentary that seems to boast equally outlandish levels of silliness, is the handiwork of Clement and Conchords director Taika Waititi, and reunites them with Murray himself, Rhys Darby. Set in New Zealand, **Shadows **follows the day-to-day lives of vampires Viago (Waititi), Deacon (Jonathan Brugh), and Vladislav (Clement) as they strive heroically to cope with the demands of modern life. There's all the usual complexities of flat sharing (rent-shy flatmates, bills to be paid, chores), complicated by some rather more unusual ones (the constant craving for human blood, the untimely arrival of vampire hunters, vampire hipsters).
Runs the synopsis: "Hundreds of years old, the vampires are finding that beyond sunlight catastrophes, hitting the main artery, and not being able to get a sense of their wardrobe without a reflection-modern society has them struggling with the mundane like paying rent, keeping up with the chore wheel, trying to get into nightclubs, and overcoming flatmate conflicts." The premise is hardly a new one - see Dark Shadows - but the execution here looks right on the money.
Its theatrical release in New Zealand should be followed swiftly by a cinema run in these parts, courtesy of Metrodome, or something has gone horribly wrong somewhere.
