Doctor Who Christmas Special 2016

Now that Christmas Day itself is less than two weeks away, it must be time for another look at this year's Doctor Who special episode, which has become a fixture of the festive telly schedule since the show returned in 2005. The next of the specials will be The Return Of Doctor Mysterio, and you can see the trailer below.

With superheroes everywhere around, it makes sense that the genre has finally filtered into the Who-niverse, via the imagining and keyboard of departing executive producer Steven Moffat.

This year's entry finds Peter Capaldi's Doctor in New York, with brain-swapping aliens on the attack. The Doctor and Matt Lucas' Nardole (he appeared in last year's Christmas ep, The Husbands Of River Song) join forces with investigative journalist Lucy Fletcher (Charity Wakefield) to figure out what's going on. They'll have help from a mysterious hero known as The Ghost, and a bloke named Grant Gordon (Justin Chatwin), who are strangely never seen in the same room. Wonder what that can be about?

We'd expect the usual madness and attack eyebrows, with the episode hitting screens on December 25 before the show finally returns for Moffat's farewell season in April 2017.
