It can be a tough task to infuse a film with the sonic intensity of a certain movement or era while also crafting a compelling character story. Beats is promising to do both and has received plenty of rave reviews along the way. Check out the latest trailer.

The setting is Scotland, 1994, as the Criminal Justice Bill is attempting to place crack down on the UK’s rave culture and the free party movement. Best mates Johnno and Spanner (Cristian Ortega and Lorn Macdonald) share a deep bond and have for years.

Now on the cusp of adulthood, life is destined to take them in different directions – Johnno’s family are moving him to a new town and a better life, leaving Spanner behind to face a precarious future. But this summer is going to be different for them, and for the country. The explosion of the free party scene and the largest counter-cultural youth movement in recent history is happening across the UK...

Brian Welsh is the director here, adapting the script from Kieren Hurley's play alongside the playwright. The cast also includes Laura Fraser, Brian Ferguson and Ross Mann. It'll arrive in UK cinemas on 17 May.
