Old School, Elf and Starsky And Hutch writer Scot Armstrong is being handed a chance to wave the megaphone on his latest job.

New Line has scraped together more than $2 million to buy the comedy spec script Multiple Mary from Jay Dyer. Armstrong will re-write the screenplay and serve as director and producer.

The story finds two best friends finding girlfriends at the same time. But – and surely you sure this coming based on the title – they discover that she’s the same woman with multiple personalities! It was the subject of a heated bidding war between several studios (yes, there was name-calling and hair-pulling), because – according to The Hollywood Reporter – it has the advantage of not needing big stars to make it work and featuring a strong female comedy role.

And New Line seems confident they have the right man for the job. “'His script for (basketball comedy) Semi-Pro landed Will Ferrell, and his take on Multiple Mary is inspired," New Line president of production Toby Emmerich told the trade mag. "We think he has the talent to pull off this movie."
