MTV Movie Award Nominations 2004

Pirates lead the pack

The defiantly lowbrow MTV Movie Awards announced their nominations yesterday, and the omens are looking good for Pirates of the Caribbean with six nods. Oscar darling and world-beater The Return of the King managed a paltry two, for Best Film and Best Action Sequence, and tied on four awards each were X-Men 2 and 50 First Dates. Despite having narry a Billy Crystal in sight, the awards manage to be highly amusing viewing, with some of Hollywood's finest comics lining up to host. Last year's awards featured Seann William Scott in a pair of Y-fronts adorned with the face of co-host Justin Timberlake, along with some rather amusing spoof scenes featuring the two as superheroes. Previous years saw Jack Black dressed up as Legolas, Ben Stiller in a Twister skit, and the cast of Charlie's Angels spoofing themselves (intentionally, as opposed to they way they spoofed themselves in Full Throttle). The awards are also notable for the kind of risqu fashions that would get you slung out of the Oscars on your ear, and such categories as "Best Kiss", "Best Villain", "Best Action Sequence" and "Best Fight", which give the big action movies a much stronger presence than they have at traditional award shows. The MTV Movie Awards are to be held on 10 June this year, so expect to see them repeated ad nauseam on the channel after that date.
