If Movies Be The Food of Love

Twelfth Night gets the Clueless treatment

Here at Empire, we are by no means against the teen movie in principle. We can put hand on heart and proudly admit to a love of films like 10 Things I Hate About You and Clueless. This is, of course, justifiable on the basis that said teen opuses are based on proper literary classics, and being the heavyweight intellectuals that we all are, we could see past the Valley girl slang and breakdancing teens to the deep themes running through the film. Plus Heath Ledger and Alicia Silverstone were, like, totally babelicious. Having said all that, Shakespeare and Austen should not be attempted without serious and careful thought and a large helping of satire. Hence our trepidation today at the news that Amanda Bynes, last seen in What A Girl Wants, is to star in an as-yet untitled "contemporary take on Twelfth Night" for Dreamworks. She will play a girl who, for some obscure but no doubt perfectly sensible reason, must pose as her twin brother when he goes missing for two weeks. Romantic and comic complications will, apparently, result. Next week, the Olsen twins star as Henry IV, Parts One and Two, while Hilary Duff plays Titus Andronicus. Or something.
