Mortensen Offers Promises

Working with David Cronenberg on A History Of Violence obviously left an impression on Viggo Mortensen – and we’re not just talking bruises.

The Violence star has signed up to work with Cronenberg a second time in Eastern Promises, which is currently one of two new projects the director is considering.

Written by Dirty Pretty Things scribe Steve Knight and tackling a similar subject, Promises sees a nurse investigating a young Russian’s death in childbirth. Her inquiries lead her down a dangerous path that includes a Russian mob-run prostitution ring. Mortensen has agreed to play a man with ties to the villains.

But the London-set thriller is still competing with Cronenberg’s other current job prospect – comedy drama Maps To The Stars, which pokes into Hollywood excess. As for which gets made first, only Cronenberg knows at this point.
